Parlementia Beach

The Plage de Parlementia is located in the small coastal village of Guéthary in the French Basque Country, between a forest path and a beach promenade. The picturesque rocky sandy beach is particularly popular with hikers and surfers who find excellent waves here. There are toilets and showers, and in the high season in summer, the beach is supervised. The surf school also offers paddling, and a restaurant provides catering. The beautiful sunsets over the sea are also popular.

Port of Guéthary

Guéthary is located not far from the famous holiday resorts of Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz and is often visited on an excursion. It is popular mainly because of its tranquility and its partially still untouched nature. The main attraction of Guéthary is the harbor. It is the smallest on the Basque coast. The boats do not anchor in the water but are brought ashore after each outing. In Guéthary, there are four wild beaches, one of which is located right next to the harbor.

Saint-Nicolas Church of Guéthary

The Catholic Church of Saint-Nicolas, as a widely visible building, marks the highest point of the coastal community of Guéthary. It is a church building from the 16th century. It is named after Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. Architecturally, the church impresses with its side galleries featuring timber elements made of dark oak, which frame the slightly elevated altar. Inside, you can admire 17th-century statues as well as numerous paintings with Christian symbolism.

Saraleguinea Museum of Guéthary

The Musée Saraleguine in Guéthary is housed in the neo-Basque Villa Saraleguine. On display are sculptures, ceramics, and paintings by the sculptor Georges Clément de Swiecinski. The Roman finds from the 1st century, discovered during excavations, also deserve attention. Part of the museum is dedicated to the sculptor and poet Paul-Jean Toulet. He spent many years in Guéthary and left behind some of his most important plastic works. In the lovingly designed garden of the villa, sculptures and mosaics by other artists can be seen.

Lafitenia Beach is located in Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the Basque Country. As a rather wild beach that is not overly crowded, it features golden sand, clean, crystal-clear water, a beautiful panorama, and relatively much tranquility. Despite its gentle wildness, there are toilets and showers here, as well as a snack bar and a food truck that sometimes also offers ice cream and coffee. Additionally, you can play beach volleyball or bocce with your family here, or try stand-up paddling.

La Rhune

Although La Rhune is only 900 m high, a saying of the Basques states that anyone who makes it to its summit can conquer any mountain in the Basque Country. Expect a two to three-hour hike on foot. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view of the Pyrenees and the blue of the Atlantic. You can reach the top more comfortably and quickly with the cog railway, which takes you to your destination in about 35 minutes.

On the Trail of the Way of St. James: Ur-Onea Chapel

About 5 km separate the center of Guéthary from the Ur-Onea Chapel in Bidart. The charming white building is idyllically situated under trees. The wisteria arch around the gate adds a romantic touch. The chapel became a pilgrimage magnet due to the good water (Ur Onea) it is named after. The water, which is no longer drinkable today, was said to be effective against skin diseases.

Visit to the Garden of Ostalapia Farm

You can comfortably cover the 3.6 km distance from Guéthary to Gut Ostalapia by bicycle. The visit is worthwhile not only because of the restaurant, where you can enjoy Basque delicacies in a cozy atmosphere. Surrounding the 17th-century manor house is a charming farmhouse garden with panoramic views.

Discover primal nature at the Cirque d'Erretegia

Rounded stones from the sea lie scattered on the golden-yellow sand of Plage d'Erretegia. You can reach it near the Bidart Center, about 4.2 km from Guéthary. At the Cirque d'Erretegia, you will find an exciting variety of species and typical regional fauna and flora after a renaturation. The project aims to help address climate change.

Arcangues Castle

From Guéthary, you only drive 10 km to the Château d'Arcangues in the town of the same name. Around 1900, the "new building" replaced a castle that was built in 1636 after the Spanish Succession Wars. Situated in the middle of a park, the castle today serves as a picturesque wedding venue. Its facade is covered with green climbing plants, giving it an enchanted appearance.

Day 1

Although Guéthary is considered the smallest village on the Basque coast, a stroll through the picturesque holiday resort reveals charming spots that can easily fill an entire vacation day. There's the small fishing harbor, where wooden fishing boats lie on a cobblestone ramp because all boats are pulled out of the sea after their outing. A cliff path leads up to the Chapelle Saint-Joseph, where you can enjoy a magnificent view of one of Europe's most popular surf spots, Parlementia. Strolling past red-and-white houses in Basque style, you reach the Musée Saraleguinea, which presents sculptures, ceramics, and paintings from old Guéthary in a neo-Basque villa with a park. In the afternoon, the square in front of the also neo-Basque town hall invites you to meet with locals. There, in front of the delicate facade adorned with red wooden elements, the traditional Basque ball game Pelota is played. Afterwards, trendy bars on the promenade invite you to a relaxing end of the day with tapas and wine.

Day 2

About 3 km northeast of Guéthary lies the highest village on the Basque coast, Bidart. You can reach the charming village on foot along the coast. You will walk over paths, stairs, and residential streets. For a break along the way, the beaches Uhabia and Centre offer opportunities where you can watch windsurfers riding waves up to 6 meters high. At lunchtime, the village square Place Pietonne offers atmospheric options for a stop. Additionally, the church Notre-Dame de l’Assomption invites you inside, where you might be lucky enough to hear a Basque choral. A few steps away, an old washhouse with its rustic stone basin delights visitors. Before you begin the return journey to Guéthary via the coastal path Sentier Littoral, you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the Bay of Biscay and the mountain landscape beyond to the Pyrenees in front of the chapel Sainte-Madeleine, built on a rock in 1820.

Day 3

A varied daily program awaits you on the third day in the neighboring town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. In addition to strolling and swimming, indulging is also on the agenda. For a delightful morning, the picturesque market hall offers regional sheep cheese, Basque sausages, or Bayonne ham for you to try. Nearby, the bustling activity at the picturesque harbor offers a feast for the eyes. For cultural enjoyment, you are in the right place at the harbor basin of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. There, two magnificent shipowner houses remind of the wedding of Louis XIV with the Spanish Infanta Marie-Thérèse in 1660. They served as accommodation for the bridal couple and today invite you to visit. The wedding took place in the nearby church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, which impresses with its wooden galleries. When the afternoon sun makes the facades of the half-timbered houses glow, the promenade of the picturesque fishing village invites you to stroll. Charming cafés tempt you to a delightful break, while next door in the Bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the calm sea calls for a refreshing dip.
