Cap d'Agde - Must-see attractions
Brescou Fort
About one kilometer off the coast of Cap d'Agde lies the Fort de Brescou on the island of the same name. It was built in the 16th century for defense against the Spanish conquerors and later served as a state prison. The fortress seems to be fused with the rocks of the islands. Even today, the four bastions of the castle can be seen. In front of one of them stretches a small sandy beach. Besides the fort, there are also two lighthouses on the island.
Cap d'Agde Harbor
The fashionable Port de Cap d'Agde invites you to linger and shop with its many small cafés, restaurants, and boutiques. Stroll along the promenade and enjoy the live music under the open sky, especially in the evening hours. Directly opposite the harbor is Plage Richelieu, which is very popular, especially in the summer months between May and September. Swim in the refreshing Mediterranean or sunbathe on the expansive dream beach.
Conch Beach
Plage de la Conque is located between Montpellier and Narbonne and is considered an insider tip among vacationers. Here you will find a natural coastline characterized by rocks, fine pebbles, and year-round green vegetation. The beach promises a relaxed atmosphere, and the bay is suitable for children to swim in many places due to the shallow water. Kayak tours and stand-up paddling along Plage de la Conque are also very popular.
Bagnas Nature Reserve
Around 250 bird species live here. They find ideal living conditions in the large open lagoon Entang du Bagnas, in the salt marshes, in the reed beds and reeds, as well as in the swamps and small forests. In winter, ornithologists estimate up to 6,000 water birds. In addition to year-round birds, many are only in the nature reserve for breeding or passing through. During exciting guided tours, observe powerful fish and snake eagles. The tours start at the national park house Maison de la Reserve. At the same time, the center hosts interesting exhibitions about the region.
Aqualand Agde
On 4 hectares, the aquapark gathers several giant slides where guests race through tubes on rubber tires. You can drift along the wild Congo River. A special area is reserved for surfers to test their balance on a standing wave. Children can look forward to their own area, centered around a pirate ship. Adults will find a quiet spot in the shaded relaxation area. Several restaurants, including a pizzeria and a grill station, cater to the hungry bathers.
Ephebe Museum
Immerse yourself in the regional and maritime-influenced history at the Museu de l'Ephebe, from prehistory and early history through the Middle Ages to modern times. Marvel at the exciting cargoes of wrecks from the 17th to 19th centuries, among other things. Archaeology enthusiasts are in the right place at the Museum l'Ephebe. Here you will learn a lot of interesting facts about the ancient Roman city of Agde and its excavations, which are now overbuilt by the modern city. Changing special exhibitions with maritime focuses complement the permanent exhibition.

Cliffs of La Grande Conque
Massive volcanic eruptions have shaped the rugged coastline of La Grande Conque in Cap d'Agde. Over millions of years, erosion has created small bays whose sand, like that of Plage de La Grande Conque, is black in color. During a hike, you have a magnificent view of the Cap and the breathtaking cliffs.
Agde round lock
From Cap d’Agde, a trip to the town of Agde is worthwhile to visit the remarkable historical round lock. It compensates for the level difference between the Canal du Midi and the Hérault River. The structure, completed in 1676, is one of the round locks and even offers a third access to a branch canal.
The Garden of Saint Adrien
The award-winning landscape garden Le Jardin de Saint Adrien is located in the southern French department of Aude and is the green legacy of an old basalt quarry from the Mediterranean. On 4 hectares, you can stroll among well-tended almond trees, agaves, palms, and four bodies of water with enchanting water lilies, a worthwhile excursion from the holiday area of Cap d’Agde, which is 30 minutes away by car.
The historic Château Laurens castle
The Château Laurens is a late 19th-century castle that impresses with its extravagant decoration, colorful murals, and antique furnishings. Located on an island, you can reach the palace villa in the southern French Art Nouveau style via the Bell-Isle Park and the historic garden not far from the popular beach district of Cap-d'Agde in the Hérault-Aude department.

Day 1
Cap d'Agde is one of the ten districts of the French city of Agde. It is located on the Mediterranean Sea between Montpellier and Narbonne. Cap d'Agde is known for its magnificent beaches, surrounded by small footpaths and lawns. Among the most beautiful beaches is Plage Richelieu, where you can relax on the first day. Walk along the harbor mole to the lighthouse Phare de la Digue, from whose viewing platform you have a wonderful view over the sea. Take a boat trip to Fort de Brescou. The 17th-century fortress stands on a small island of volcanic origin. Around the harbor of Cap d'Agde, numerous attractions await you: visit a water park, the amusement park Luna Park, or the Musée de l'Éphèbe, which is dedicated to archaeological finds from the sea. A little further inland rises the 113 m high Mont Saint-Loup, a volcanic hill covered with pine forests.
Day 2
On the second day, you will explore the old town of Agde. It is also known as the Black Pearl of the Mediterranean because most of the buildings are made of black basalt stone. The town is traversed by the Canal du Midi, which connects Toulouse with the Mediterranean. Along the canal is France's last round lock with three lock gates. A visit to Villa Laurens is a must. This Art Nouveau villa was built at the end of the 19th century in the then-dominant eclectic style. You can explore the villa on your own or with a guided tour. Around the canal, there is a network of bike paths totaling 43 km in length. Cycle along the canal or the banks of the Hérault River to Grau d'Agde. This western district of Agde is a traditional fishing village with numerous seafood restaurants. If you have time, take a guided tour to see the fish auction hall Belvédère de la Criée.
Day 3
On the third day, you visit Sète. The port city can be reached by car in half an hour and by bike in one and a half hours. The route runs along the coast, offering beautiful panoramas. Make a stop in Marseillan. The seaside resort is located on a long, narrow strip of land that separates the Étang de Thau lagoon from the Mediterranean Sea. Stroll along the Avenue de la Méditerranée and admire the yachts in the marina. Sète is also located on the lagoon and is surrounded by water on all sides, earning it the nickname Venice of Languedoc. Are you enthusiastic about culture? Then visit the Musée Paul Valéry, dedicated to the famous poet. Also interesting is the museum commemorating the singer Georges Brassens. From the 175-meter-high Mont Saint-Clair, you have a beautiful view over the city.

In Cap d’Agde in the French department of Herault Aude, there is a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. The sun-drenched region offers excellent climatic conditions for a Mediterranean vacation all year round. However, the best time to travel for an unforgettable vacation is from May to October with temperatures between 20 and 30 °C. From June to September, the Mediterranean Sea's water temperature is between 20 and 24 °C, making this period perfect for a beach and swimming vacation.
