Elba Island - The most beautiful cities
Portoferraio
In Portoferraio is Napoleon's former winter residence, the Villa dei Mulini. Today it houses a national museum with the living quarters of the self-crowned emperor. Colorful buildings line the picturesque harbor of the city. Fish restaurants, small shops, and lounge bars create a cozy atmosphere and invite you to enjoy this mood with a drink. On the island, you can visit the Roman villas or relax on the beach. Choose between pebble beaches like the paradisiacal Le Ghiaie beach or sandy beaches. A wine tasting at the Poggio Turco vineyard is also recommended. Enjoy a Spumante Brut Rosato Aleatico with spicy cheese.
Capoliveri
The Romanesque church of San Michele offers you a beautiful view of the Porto Azzurro harbor and is a recommended excursion destination. The bays of the small fishing villages Morcone, L'Innamorata, and Pareti are also very worth seeing. For those who prefer tranquility, the beaches Madonna delle Grazie or Felciaio are highly recommended. The fortress Forte Focardo sits atop a rock that steeply drops into the sea. From the historic building and the lighthouse, you can see an impressive panorama with sea and mountain peaks. In October, you can experience the traditional wine festival in Capoliveri and in July the Festa dell’Innamorata.
Porto Azzurro
Porto Azzurro boasts beautiful beaches. The Terranera beach is idyllically located by a lake that sparkles in extraordinary emerald shades. A small sandy section separates the popular lake from the sea. In a sheltered bay lies the Barbarossa beach, from which you can see the mountain peaks of the majestic Monte Castello. A special feature of the place is its stilt-house restaurants, which offer the treasures of the sea in a culinary way. The fishing festival, which always takes place in July, also brings you closer to the traditions of the small village. Those who wish to participate in the procession of the Madonna of Monserrato should travel to the beautiful island of Elba in September.
Rio Marina
Due to the shimmering through the black, ore-rich dust, the coast around Rio Marina is also referred to as the radiant coast. Nowadays, the place serves as a popular bathing destination. From the harbor, you can reach the mainland or three other ports on the island, such as Piombino. For culturally interested visitors, the small town has a lot to offer. Particularly worth seeing are the Church of San Rocco, the Forte del Giove fortress, and the Palazzo di Pons de l'Hérault. In the Parco Minerario dell'Isola d'Elba, you can visit former ore works. You can learn about the associated history in the Mineral Museum.
Marciana
Hiking and trekking tours lead you to the hermitage of San Cerbone and Mount Monte Capanne. Through chestnut and holm oak forests, you hike to the peaceful site of the pilgrimage church of Madonna del Monte. It is nestled in the greenery of the forests and features frescoes from the 16th century. Marciana also offers paradisiacal bathing resorts. The beautiful coast has something for every taste. The crystal-clear water of Spiaggia di Ripa Barata or Beach Phenicia invites you to swim and linger. At Spiaggia della Crocetta, you will find great rocks to jump into. Along the promenade, you can visit the harbor and the Saracen tower.
Marino di Campo
With a total length of more than 1.4 km, the beach of Marina di Campo is the longest on the entire island of Elba and thus probably the biggest attraction in the municipality. The village also offers some sights such as the medieval center and the charming marina in the bay. Discover the many facets of Elba on hikes, bike tours, or guided excursions. Day trips to Monte Capanne, which can be climbed on foot or by cable car, are particularly popular. From there, you can enjoy a wide panoramic view over the Italian island and the many small bathing bays.
Pomonte
Due to its location, Pomonte is an ideal starting point for hiking, trekking, and mountain biking tours. Snorkelers and divers also appreciate the location, as the old shipwreck Elviscot lies just off the coast. Within a kilometer, there are three beautiful beaches inviting you to swim in the particularly clear sea water. To the north of Pomonte, granite rock formations shape the landscape. The two cliffs, di Cala Maestrale and del Calello, were once used for loading ships, but today they are popular diving boards into the sea. During the day, you have a fantastic panoramic view from the rocks, and in the evening, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset from here.
Campo nell'Elba
The offer that visitors can enjoy in the small seaside resort of Campo nell'Elba is diverse. The harbor with its cozy restaurants, cafes, and bars invites you to linger, as do the paradisiacal beaches. Golden sand and the picturesque landscape of the charming beaches Cavoli and Fetovaia offer you and your family carefree bathing pleasures par excellence. The medieval village, Sant’Ilario, offers a fascinating view of the harbor bay. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the island of Montecristo. Cool off a bit in the frescoed church and on the shady Piazza della Fonte. A trip to the monolith semicircle on Mount Monte Cocchero is also worthwhile.
