Saas-Grund - Must-see attractions
Kreuzboden-Hohsaas
The cable car from Saas-Grund takes you up to Kreuzboden in the Swiss Alps. Once at the top, numerous hiking trails lead through the mountain region, from easy family hikes through alpine meadows to challenging mountain tours. Mountain bikers can look forward to varied trails. A highlight is the glacier area at an altitude of 3,000 meters. Adjacent to it are perfectly groomed slopes in a splendid sunny location. 35 kilometers of slopes, 11 kilometers of sledding trails, and the fun park make the hearts of small and large winter sports fans beat faster.
Village Saas-Grund
With its location at an altitude of 1,559 m, the sun-drenched community of Saas-Grund is the starting point for several high-altitude trails into the Valais Alps, such as the Hohsaas with many spectacular four-thousand-meter peaks. Families will find plenty to do on the adventure mountain Kreuzboden with a petting zoo, water play park, and panoramic via ferrata. In winter, the mountain village is popular for cross-country skiing, sledding at Kreuzboden, or snowshoe hiking. However, a walk through Saas-Grund is always worthwhile. The village center exudes alpine charm with its rustic farm chalets and alleys, and cozy inns serve regional delicacies.
Alpine Valley
Starting point for the via ferrata is the car-free mountain village of Saas-Fee, located at an altitude of 1,803 m. The Gorge Alpine, with its suspension bridges and abseiling points, is a mountaineering challenge. A complete via ferrata set, including a helmet, is required for the ascent. The upper and lower parts of the Gorge Alpine can be traversed separately, the upper part from May to October, the lower part year-round. You pass through the Fairy Gorge, which starts at Saas-Fee and offers unique natural experiences with rushing waterfalls and rugged rock walls.
Saas-Fee
Approximately 350 promising kilometers of hiking trails, ranging from flat family tours to routes in high alpine terrain, await summer vacationers in Saas-Fee. A highlight for families is the Feeblitz summer toboggan run: Here you can reach speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour. In winter, Saas-Fee offers 150 kilometers of slopes, located at altitudes between 1,500 and 3,600 meters. The brave can tackle the winter via ferrata or the ice walls on the Fee Glacier. Winter hiking in Saas-Fee and Saas-Grund is much more leisurely.
Ski area Spielboden
In the region, there are a number of gondolas and lifts that take you to the high altitudes for skiing. The Spielboden is particularly suitable for exciting descents in Wallis, where you will find the right option for every difficulty. In addition to skiers, snowboard enthusiasts also get their money's worth at the Spielboden resort. Families often take the opportunity to sled at the edge of the main slopes. While engaging in sports, you enjoy a magnificent view of the Alps around Saas-Fee.
Hannigalp
The Alpine community of Grächen is the starting point for a tour to the Hannigalp. The hike up takes about an hour. Once at the top, treat yourself to a typical alpine snack in the mountain restaurant before more hiking trails await every sporting ambition. Alternatively, the gondola takes you to the Hannigalp. For little hikers, there is a children's playground. Even in winter, there is always something happening on the Alp with an indoor playground, family-friendly ski slopes, and many opportunities for winter hikes.
Saas-Grund - Secret spots
Outer Rothorn
The 3,147 m high Äusser Rothorn in the Valais Alps is a popular excursion destination. You can reach the summit in about two and a half hours, with the ascent from Saas-Grund being easier. Once at the top, you can enjoy the beautiful view over the Mischabel range with Dom, Täschhorn, and Allalinhorn.
Saaserviceland
Originating at an altitude of 2,650 m, the Saaservispa flows through the Swiss municipalities of Saas-Almagell, Saas-Grund, and Saas-Balen. The riverbank is excellent for hiking. A trip to the Mattmark reservoir, which the Saaservispa feeds, is worthwhile. From the Mattmark dam, you can let your gaze wander over the Bernese Alps.
Weissmies
Above the holiday resort of Saas-Grund in the canton of Valais rises the 4,023 m high Weissmies, the highest peak of the northeastern Valais Alps. The easiest ascent leads over the Almagellerhütte and the southeast ridge. You can also take the cable car to Hohsaas and from there conquer the remaining 800 meters in altitude.
Saas-Balen
Saas-Balen is located at the foot of the Dom in the Valais Alps. The Saaservispa flows through the municipality, and its banks turn into a cross-country ski trail in winter. A rapid descent takes you on skis from the neighboring municipality of Saas-Grund directly to Saas-Balen. In summer, you can go hiking to Matt and Heimischgartu.
Saas-Grund - In 3 days
Day 1
First, explore the community of Saas-Grund with its dark wooden houses in alpine style. Local attractions include the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. Its simple white structure from 1735 is topped by a small bell tower with an onion dome. The opulent Baroque altar inside is 50 years older. Another striking place of worship is the cemetery chapel, which today stands as a mix of old and new. In the shadow of the ribbed helmet of the old church tower, events take place in the summer. The Church of St. Bartholomew is also a new building, attracting lovers of modern glass art with its colorful windows. Three Baroque altars provide a contrast to the simple interior. In the afternoon, hop on an e-bike and take a tour to the glacier lake, nearly 13 kilometers away. The starting point is the village square of Saas-Balen. At the destination, you will find three glacier lakes with milky-turquoise shimmering water, above which the rugged ice walls of the glacier unfold.
Day 2
If you want to combine sacred art with a hike, head to the Chapel Trail between Saas-Grund and the neighboring community of Saas-Fee. You will walk through one of the most significant sacred landscapes of Upper Valais, where fifteen baroque chapels line up like pearls of a rosary. Embedded in the rocky landscape, each chapel contains colorfully painted, wooden carved figures. With children, a detour to the playground in Saas-Fee is worthwhile. While you prepare everything for a snack at the barbecue area, the little ones can play on the climbing tower or let bark boats float on the babbling brook. There are even toilets here. Even more action awaits you at the Feeblitz toboggan run. In summer, you race on rails through the idyllic landscape. Another child-friendly highlight in Saas-Fee is the Kneipp facility. In the facility with water treading and various ground textures, both young and old have sensory experiences.
Day 3
An exciting hike awaits you on the Jegihorn via ferrata, one of the highest in the Alps at over 3,000 meters. First, take the cable car from Saas-Grund to the Kreuzboden middle station and from there to the Hohsaas mountain station. However, only reasonably experienced climbers should attempt the ascent, carrying full climbing equipment and sufficient provisions. Your endurance is rewarded by the magnificent landscape amidst the four-thousand-meter peaks of the Valais. Ladders lead you to the highlight of the route, the long suspension bridge. You should plan most of the day for the hike. For a less demanding hike, the high trail Saas-Fee – Grächen, located west of Saas-Grund, is recommended. The short path also requires surefootedness and rewards you with a wonderful panorama. In Aqua Allalin in Saas-Fee, a spa with a whirlpool, sauna, and soothing treatments awaits you in front of a magnificent panorama, relaxing your muscles aching from the exertion.
