Capbreton - Must-see attractions
Capbreton Pier
In the bustling fishing and yacht harbor, cozy cafés beckon. Relax as you watch the boats coming and going, as well as the landing of the fresh catch. At the pier with the boardwalk, restaurants invite you to a comfortable stay. The view of the deep blue Atlantic waves is magnificent. The attraction at the Capbreton pier is the 190-meter-long boardwalk from 1858. The Atlantic waves break at the end of the jetty with the small lighthouse. Come here in the evening when the fiery red sun sinks into the sea.
Capbreton Harbor
Capbreton is a popular excursion destination. The place became especially well-known through the writer and musician Boris Vian, who spent several years of his life here. The port of the coastal community is divided into a fishing port and a marina. The half-timbered house dates from the 15th century and is thus one of the oldest buildings in Capbreton. Every morning, a fish market takes place in the harbor around the pier, where you can buy fresh fish.
The Gulf
The term "Gouf" comes from the French "gouffre" and means abyss, chasm. Thanks to its special location and the prevailing currents, Le Gouf hosts a rich and diverse animal kingdom. Experience the world of the deep sea right off the coast. In the approximately 300 km long underwater canyon, stonefish, octopuses, tuna, giant sharks, and beaked whales, among others, live. Every two years in September, scientists invite people to a Gouf Day. The latest research findings are described, and the gigantic canyon is presented to a wide audience.
The Boudigau
The river course measures not even 25 kilometers, leading through untouched nature in some places. Walk along the natural banks or discover the flora and fauna from a boat. Kayak tours are especially considered an insider tip here. Around the river, a wide selection of interesting excursion destinations awaits you. In the warm and sunny summer months, the numerous dream beaches along the Bay of Biscay invite you to sunbathe and swim, while the slightly more distant Pyrenees are considered a paradise for hikers.
The House of Orality and Heritage
The La Maison de l'Oralité et du Patrimoine, or La MOP for short, is already worth seeing from the outside. The historically oriented museum is located in an ornate half-timbered house. It dates back to the 16th century and houses the city's history. The collection of La MOP ranges from historical maps to artistic sculptures to paintings with regional references. A nice feature of the museum is the audio terminals, which tell you traditional tales and legends of Capbreton.
Beach Chapel
The Chapelle de la Plage is located on the eponymous Rue de La Chapelle and is dedicated to Saint Theresa. Originally, it belonged to the nearby Château d’Arbrun. In the 1940s and 1950s, the interior was adorned with frescoes. The chapel is popular among visitors as a place of tranquility in the otherwise very lively Capbreton. Around the Chapelle de la Plage, there are numerous restaurants, shops, and attractions. You can reach the beach in a few minutes on foot.
Capbreton - Secret spots
Boucarot Pier
South of the harbor entrance Passe de Boucarot into the only harbor of the French department Les Landes, the 189-meter-long landmark of Capbreton extends into the deep blue Atlantic - l'Estacade. The wooden pier, at the end of which a lighthouse rises, offers breathtaking views of the colorful harbor and the lively promenade.
Varied bike tour on the Piste Verte
The section La Piste Verte of the famous Vélodyssée bike path passes through Capbreton. Hop on the saddle and explore the seaside resorts along the coast of Les Landes to the north, such as Hossegor and Seignosse. To the south of Capbreton, cycle through the idyllic Landes forest to Bayonne.
The Black Pond Nature Reserve
The nature reserve around the Etang Noir is located 10 km northeast of Capbreton – ideal for a relaxing day in nature. You can explore the partly boardwalk trails alone or with a guide who will reveal the secrets of the diverse animal and plant life. Bring binoculars.
The birds in the National Nature Reserve of the Marais d'Orx
Southwest of Capbreton lies the extensive wetland Marais d'Orx, which is under nature protection. To observe the diverse amphibian and bird life, boardwalks lead through the area. It is best to join a guided tour to spot the rarest feathered inhabitants. Great photo opportunities can be found at the three observation posts.
Capbreton - In 3 days
Day 1
Your vacation in Capbreton takes you to the French Atlantic coast. The coastal community in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region is known for its large marina, which gives the resort a sophisticated charm. On your first vacation day, a walk along the expansive harbor is a must. There are snow-white sailboats to admire, and numerous bars and restaurants invite you to take a break with a cold drink or French cuisine while enjoying views of the ships and a Mediterranean holiday feeling. For a sporty excursion during a vacation with children, the Capbreton skatepark is not far from the harbor. Young and old try their hand at adrenaline-filled jumps here. The walk continues from the marina to the beach. Enjoy a first glimpse of the roaring waves of the Atlantic with a beach walk at any time of the year or the construction of the first summer sandcastle of the vacation with the whole family.
Day 2
On day 2, enjoy the Atlantic beach of your resort either in a relaxed manner or with plenty of sports. In summer, look forward to sunbathing and a refreshing dip in the sea, flying kites, and collecting beautiful shells with the whole family during the cooler seasons. The good winds of the Atlantic attract water sports enthusiasts to Capbreton. Surf fans, in particular, are in the right place here. Beginners who want to try the perfect wave can choose from several surf schools on site. In the evening, the second day of vacation ends with a view of the west-facing sea and the sunset. You have a particularly beautiful panoramic view during a walk along the pier, which leads you far into the sea with dry feet. Alternatively, a visit to the Capbreton casino is worthwhile. Try your luck at the roulette table or a game of blackjack in the elegant casino right behind the coast.
Day 3
Use the third day of your vacation for nature-related excursions in the surrounding area. Beyond Capbreton, the Réserve Naturelle Nationale du Marais d'Orx stretches inland. The nature reserve is characterized by its extensive marshlands surrounding a lake. On hiking trails with adventurous walkways, you can explore the marshland on a family outing. The nature reserve is also a worthwhile destination for bird watching. Excursions on two wheels are great fun around Capbreton. A particularly beautiful route leads on a flat and family-friendly path from the center always along the Boudigau Canal. If you wish, you can combine the bike trip with the excursion to the marshland, which the canal passes directly by. Slightly shorter is the approximately 7 km long canal route to the neighboring coastal town of Labenne. Here, a visit to the Zoo de Labenne is enticing during a vacation with children, before the tour leads back along the canal to Capbreton in a relaxed manner.
